Was Jesus viewed as divine in the New Testament? There’s a simple test that can help us answer this question. Was he given praise that only God deserves? Consider the following verses:
The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen (2 Tim 4:18). Who is the Lord? Paul begins the letter by calling Jesus “our Lord.” “Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord” (2 Tim 1:2).
But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen. (2 Pet 3:18)
To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father—to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen. (Rev 1:5b-6)
These are three examples of Jesus being given eternal glory. First-century Jewish men would know that ascribing such praise to anyone other than God is blasphemy. Hence, they must have viewed Jesus as divine.

My post on the Shroud has been the most popular article on this site in recent weeks. I think this is due to an increased interest in the Shroud in popular culture. I have updated the post here.

I have served as a high school Bible teacher in Asia and the U.S. My new book explores the amazing doctrine of the Trinity.
