As I was reading a commentary today, the author’s (C. H. Dodd) translation of a verse caught my attention: “Courage! I have conquered the world” (Jn 16:33).
These are the last words of Jesus to his disciples in his farewell discourse (Jn 14-16). I like the translation because it’s concise, direct, and commanding. I can imagine a military general with a deep voice saying, “Courage!”
Here’s how a few Bible versions render it:
- Be courageous! I have conquered the world. (CSB)
- but take courage; I have overcome the world. (NASB)
- But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (NIV)
Believers are blessed to follow the ultimate conqueror—one who defeated hatred with love, darkness with light, sin with forgiveness, and death with life. “Courage!” He has conquered the world.
